3M Manages Diverse Network of Mobile Devices with Wavelink Avalanche

When 3M, a global leader in a number of markets from health care and highway safety, to office products and optical films for LCD displays,  looked to better manage its mobile devices and wireless infrastructure at some 30 plants nationwide, the global leader in its space turned to the industry leader in the wireless ecosystem space for help.

3M is a Fortune 500 company with worldwide sales of $25.3 billion and more than 79,000 employees, so the idea of managing all of their wireless infrastructure and mobile devices in inventory required a reliable, flexible, and most importantly, effective management solution. In addition, 3M needed to provide a level of wireless security that could not be compromised.

So which solution did 3M decide on? After looking at several different options, 3M decided that no other solution could offer the same level of comprehensiveness and device support that Wavelink Avalanche Mobility Center (MC) could. 3M also needed a solution that could work with a wide range of mobile device manufacturers, and Avalanche simply stood out from the crowd with this flexibility. Additionally, as a long time user of Wavelink’s emulation client, Wavelink TE, 3M was familiar with the outstanding product support and innovation that came with Wavelink products.

Wavelink Extends Enterprise Device Management to Include POS and Tethered Scanners

Teaming up with Datalogic Scanning, Wavelink is now offering a remote management solution for Datalogic’s fixed position point-of-sale (POS) and handheld bar code scanners. Datalogic customers can now use Avalanche MC, to remotely access and centrally manage Datalogic scanners from a host terminal.

Typically, retailers have required an IT person to physically tend to each scanner in order to update them. With centralized management from Avalanche MC, administrators can remotely update the firmware for all of their scanners and collect usage statistics and health information, resulting in significant time and cost savings.

For more information on Datalogic POS and handheld bar code scanners please visit www.scanning.datalogic.com.

The new release improves the user interface, streamlines the addition of voice features, provides advanced scripting tools and adds WWAN enhancements. New features for Terminal Emulation 7.2 include:

Script Editor is available as a standalone via ActiveSync or Motorola’s Airbeam.
  • WWAN support – Users can create customized Host Profiles to connect to a WWAN, such as a cellular network, when the wireless LAN is not available. It can be set to automatically disconnect a WWAN when all sessions using it are disconnected.
